After a late night following yesterdays USA vs Mexico matchup in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) all I wanted to do was skip the first of two WBC games that took place at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Its funny how a game I would have done anything to have not shot ended up being quite possibly my best baseball game ever. I got to see a couple things I’d never seen happen at a game. Keep reading…

For the first few innings of the game I would shoot from a slightly elevated view on the concourse level.

It didn’t take long for me to get a play that made for some nice photos to start my day.

In the fourth inning my good day would become great courtesy of Mexico outfielder Karim Garcia.

I literally could not believe my eyes as Garcia prepared to hit Robinson. I have good luck with auto racing but rarely with baseball.

Both players helmets fly off from the hit.

Even as Chris Robinson falls, you can see him securing the ball with both hands before hitting the dirt.

Robinson was able to hold onto the ball which ruled Karim Garcia out.

Getting that sequence was every bit as satisfying as getting photos of fiery explosions or even catching big bass. This game was solidified as an awesome game now.

In the photo well I was joking with a couple fellow photographers that the only thing that could make the game any better was a benches clearing brawl.

NEVER in my wildest dreams did I actually think it would happen.

Fast forward to the ninth inning.

With a healthy lead Canada batter Chris Robinson would lay down a bunt and safely reach base.

Mexico pitcher Arnold Leon decided to retaliate on the next batter…

Quickly the field was covered with players from both teams pushing and shoving. Much like a movie scene with leaking gas from a vehicle, all it would take is a spark to set things off.

Spark!

The pushing and shoving would instantly become crazy punching and tackling. The best way to describe it is when you kick an ant hill and they come out PISSED!

My shooting position from the third base photo well didn’t give me much of a view of the fighting but it still had me giggling like a kid as I shot the melee.

And that wraps up the best baseball game I ever shot!
