Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 800iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual NHRA top fuel dragster driver Clay Millican crosses the finish line at speed. Note the front and rear wings slightly bent as the 320 mph pressure takes these high tech parts to the limits. (I showed this pic to one of my top fuel driver friends and his response was, "whoa, I don't wanna see that!)

After spending all day Friday on the starting line it was time to find a new angle for the second day of racing in E-town. Sunny skies and temps in the 90’s would present the drivers with a 134 degree track. Temps that high always make for tricky track conditions.

A packed crowd was on hand as pro qualifying kicks off on Saturday.

Canon 1Dx, 70-200mm, 200iso, f5, 1/1000th, Manual With the New Jersey State Police having their silly rules that no photographers are allowed to shoot in the shutdown area I chose my next best option at the track. A beer garden viewing area right at the quarter mile mark. As long as you enjoy drunk fans bumping into you and harassing you, its a great place to shoot from!

Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 500iso, f5.6, 1/2000th, Manual The hair of Angie Smith flies behind her as she races to the finish line during pro stock motorcycle qualifying. With how much aerodynamics play in this ultra competitive category I wonder if tucking the hair into her suit would be good for a couple thousands of a second increase. Hmmm

Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 400iso, f5.6, 1/2000th, Manual Heat waves pour from the engine on David Grubnic's top fuel dragster as he gets to the finish line on a qualifying run. Despite how fast it looks like he's going, Grubnic unfortunately failed to qualify for eliminations.

Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 400iso, f5.6, 1/2000th, Manual NHRA top fuel driver Brittany Force at speed in her Castrol Edge dragster. The crazy thing I found from this shooting position is how long some drivers stayed in the throttle past the finish line. In this pic she is still on the throttle past the 1200ft mark. And she was far from the only driver doing so!

Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 640iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual In the final round of pro mod qualifying, Steve Matusek gets his turbocharged Mustang way sideways off the starting line. He would recover but the run officially put him on my watch list. Much like the TSA no fly list its a list you probably don't wanna be on...

Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 800iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual NHRA pro mod driver Steve Matusek gets ridiculously out of control in the first round of eliminations. If you look closely he is on two wheels as he crosses the finish line in the wrong lane. The crowd exploded with cheers following one of the saves of the year. With that pass he now has his name highlighted and circled on my watch list!

Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 800iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual Technically this is a terrible photo as pro mod driver Von Smith heads towards the sand trap after a very late parachute. I like how every single person in this shot is watching whats going to happen as he enters the sand. While his car will certainly need a bath, he stopped before hitting the dreaded catch net.

One more day of racing before I can get home!

Johnny on the spot as usual, Mark. More examples of your excellent photography. Keep ’em coming. Appreciate each shoot.

Amazingphotos as always MArk. I can’t believe the amount of distortion still in the tyres at the top end. That to me is even scarier than the wing bends.

    Cheers
