Under sunny and humid weather conditions we kicked off the NHRA Spring Nationals near Houston, TX. It would be a day of some good pics. Continue on to see my day…

Before we get started, I gotta show off my fish I caught yesterday before the race weekend started. Special thanks to Justin League for inviting me along. It was a blast!

Photo by Chris Cook This is my first Alligator Gar. Caught in the Trinity River near Houston. The fish weighed 25 lbs and was nearly four feet long. It was a true river monster… even though by alligator gar standards this one was a baby.

Ok enough fishing, lets get to some drag racing!

Haven’t gotten to the track early in awhile so I made a point to get to the track several hours before pro qualifying to get some shots of the crew members unloading their cars.

Prior to the first round of pros I headed to the top end to do some shooting during sportsman qualifying.

During comp eliminator qualifying we would have a top end incident.

Canon 1Dx, 600mm, 400iso, f7.1, 1/2500th, Manual NHRA comp eliminator driver Mike Trumble loses control prior to crashing during qualifying for the Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway.

Normally with the car this close I would have already switched to my other camera body, which has a wider angle lens, but the crash came without any warning so I had to stick with the camera that was in my hands if I had any hopes of a decent shot.

Here is my last shot with the whole car in the frame before I was totally over lensed.

As the car slid away it was small enough in the frame again for me to get the whole car in the shot.

Mike Trumble would be unhurt in the spin and wall slap.

Here is a screen shot of the uncropped thumbnails showing how over lensed I was when Mike Trumble crashed right across from me. I should have been shooting with a 70mm lens, instead I shot with a 600mm!

Time for pro qualifying!

That wraps up a busy Friday at the track. Lets see what Saturday has in store!

Man bro Mark, You can really snap good Flix. Even my favorite sport John Force Racing , I love the NHRA & USAC OUTLAWS! I commend you on your Pro-Fessional Photo skills.
I’m quite old use to have two Pentax ME’s one PE & one MX with auto-winders on both An Takumar lenses. Now I have stepped up to Digital world like your self. I’m not a Pro but really love your abilities big time. Your Pic’s are like no one elses by far, If I can only come up with lighting skills like that. I just purchased a old Canon Eos 550D an a Cannon 18mm – 200mm EF-S IS I’m learning a lot through you so keep up the great brand standard you’ve set for yourself cause It’s working. Someday maybe you’ll throw a Photo Class Seminar In Las Vegas where I live . That I’ll Attend for sure. thanks Duane cole.
