After a few days of shooting below the tree line it was time for me to experience more of what Pikes Peak had to offer. Boy am I glad I did!

Another day, another 2:30am alarm. #fun!

While doing dinner the previous evening with fellow motorsports photographers Rainier Ehrhardt and Jamey Price, they made it very clear that I needed to shoot above the tree line in the higher elevations if I wanted the really cool photos.

They weren’t lying!

At the higher elevations on the mountain it starts to look like you’re on the planet Mars or some out of this world location.

I was super excited for the sun to rise for two reasons.

1. Awesome light would soon follow.

2. The temperature would soon rise and I wouldn’t be freezing!

Unlike all my previous positions with limited view of the course, here above the trees you could see a lot of the track. Especially from my elevated position.

One of my favorite things in the world when shooting photos are light pockets. Basically a light pocket is sunlight hitting an area filled with lots of shade. When you can get a good light pocket it makes photos almost appear to have been taken in a studio with controlled light.

See the shadows in the below photo? That was caused by photographers cars parked on a hill. The cars ruined my backgrounds from some angles but in this case they really helped.

One thing I was a bit nervous about going into the day was the high altitude (2 miles up). Its very easy to get some horrific headaches from working in an environment that lacks the normal oxygen we are all used to.

Thankfully I didn’t get a headache.

Hanging out the passenger window of my ride I was able to get this shot of Rhys Millen heading down the mountain following practice for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

That wraps up a very good morning on the mountain. We have no racing action tomorrow so I look forward to sleeping in!

Like that you took advantage of the sun and the shadowcast. Makes for some good shoots. Now, can you get back to NHRA drag racing. Love your pics, but my interest is –you guessed it–drag racing, the 10, 000hp, tire twisting action. And now you know the rest of the story! Keep up the excellent shoots. See ya.
