Baltimore Ravens inside linebacker Ray Lewis celebrates after defeating the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Seems like just a few years ago I was covering my first career Super Bowl, now fast forward seven years to my 5th big game. One thing I can say even after five of these games is it never gets old. The goose bumps and nervousness are there year after year and I love it! On to the game.

To prevent 100 photos in this blog I am just gonna skip all the pre game stuff and get right to the action.

My last few Super Bowls I didn’t really get too many touchdown plays coming my way. Thankfully Super Bowl XLVII would be a much better game for me.

Baltimore would be first on the board courtesy of former Arizona Cardinals star Anquan Boldin.

Face mask anyone?

The first half would be all Baltimore.

I love the below shot with random dead cheerleader falling from the roof…

The second half didn’t start the way the 49ers had hoped as the Ravens would score yet again.

After about 10 minutes I started to get concerned about the game having to be postponed to the next day. How much would that have sucked!

One good thing about the blackout is it produced some interesting light for photos.

In the digital camera age it can be very hard to avoid the temptation to quickly look on the back of your camera after shooting a play. Doing that can make you miss moments after a play that can make for good photos.

A good example is the below shot of Ted Ginn Jr pushing past a photographer which made for an interesting photo.

One shot that I had hoped to get was a Kaepernicking pose shot. Boom got it!

This was my first football game shooting with the Canon 1Dx and I gotta say that the camera did a great job of keeping up with the fast paced action.

In the previous Super Bowls I shot from the field, it was a free for all once the clock hit zero. You would have a few hundred photographers/videographers and television crews all running to the game winning quarterback. While it was always fun for me because I can run fast and beat most people to the player, it certainly had scary moments that made me wonder how long the NFL would allow it to continue occurring.

For this years game there was a new policy in play. Instead of allowing everyone onto the field right at the end, the NFL would only allow about 10% of the photographers immediate access. The rest of photographers would have to wait for two minutes before being allowed on the field.

Luckily I was one of the fortunate few to get immediate access to the field.

As soon as the clock hit zero it was game on as I had to run at full speed with two cameras on my shoulder and try and find Joe Flacco.

As I ran looking for Flacco I would shoot blindly with my wide angle camera.

I would find Flacco and be the first still photographer on the scene… a personal goal I always set for myself.

At first I thought they’d dog pile Flacco on the ground . Thankfully they changed their mind and instead picked up the game MVP.

After spending about a minute shooting Flacco I had to push my way through the scrum of photographers now surrounding him and go find more players to shoot celebrating.

Finding Ray Lewis was certainly a priority following Flacco.

After several minutes shooting celebration shots on the field I headed back into the media room to relax. I was beat!

After about two minutes in the media room an editor would tell me to go shoot in the Ravens locker room.

Ok!

I shot in the locker room back in 2007 when the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. I was expecting a similar level of celebration in the Ravens locker room but it was actually a pretty calm place.

With all the media demand for the stars of the game, players would be led away to the interview room and would be gone for well over an hour. There was never a moment of the coach and team in the room together holding the trophy.

Despite the fact that it wasn’t how I planned, I am a pro and did my best to find some shots that would be good.

And that wraps up Super Bowl number five for me. Can’t wait for next years winter edition in New York!
