In what was supposed to be a nice relaxing week off turned into a few days of following the number one golfer in the world, Tiger Woods, as he made his return to competition after eight months recovering from a knee surgery following his amazing victory in the US Open in Torrey Pines that I had the pleasure of shooting. Once again for no good reason I spent a weekend shooting NASCAR in Fontana, CA. Now don’t get me wrong, its a nice track, with a great staff and plenty of good shooting positions but plain and simple, its a boring track. Trust me I am not the only one who feels this way, just take a look at any race here and you will see thousands of empty seats that end up being more of a story each year than the races themselves.

I recently returned home from a 10 day trip to Daytona Beach, Florida, where I was covering the Daytona 500 as well as all the smaller races surrounding it. In those 10 days I only had one off day, for most a day off near a beautiful beach would provide the perfect time to take a relaxing day perhaps sitting at a cool beach side bar or getting attacked by a shark in the ocean, but for my photo geek self it gave me the chance to try something new and interesting.

The race I look forward to more than any other is the Daytona 500 every February in Florida. Typically it is one of the most exciting races of the year and is always great with photo sales. With the Daytona 500 just hours away I figured I may as well throw up a blog of random photos from the week. I am sick in the media room with the flu so it will be lacking of my random talking and nonsense.
Just three months ago NASCAR closed out their 2008 season down in Miami. At that time I was close to burned out after a pretty rough schedule of races and was glad to see it end. As it always works, after a few weeks off, I was ready for it to come back. The 2009 season began this weekend up the Florida coast in Daytona Beach, where the stars and cars of NASCAR and the ARCA series wasted no time in destroying some cars.

With Super Bowl weekend off I was desperate to find a shoot. My wishes were answered when one of my editors from ESPN.com called and asked if I wanted to travel to Las Vegas to shoot UFC 94. I knew nothing about the sport, haven’t even watched it before but of course I acted like I knew about it and gladly accepted the gig. From there it was time to start asking friends with experience how to shoot it.
