The first race of the long running “Western Swing” kicked off in the mile high city of Denver, CO home of the Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. With it being my first NHRA race in over a month after shooting World Cup in Brazil, I was anxious to smell some nitro again! Continue on to check out the shots…

Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 500iso, f5.6, 1/5000th, Manual Denver Broncos running back Montee Ball runs the ball as he is pursued by diving New England Patriots defensive lineman Rob Ninkovich.

When the Broncos defeated the Chargers last Sunday I knew I would be returning to Denver the following week for the AFC Championship game. The one question was who’d their opponent be? The answer to that was the New England Patriots. Tom Brady vs Peyton Manning with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line with me on the sidelines shooting? Hell yes!

Canon 1Dx, 400mm, 3200iso, f3.2, 1/1000th, Manual Central Florida Knights quarterback Blake Bortles (5) scrambles towards the end zone against the Baylor Bears during the Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Last week I shot my first shoot of 2014, the Fiesta Bowl between the Bayl0r Bears against the University of Central Florida Knights. This was the first time UCF had ever been in a BCS bowl game so you know they were hungry to defy the experts who had them as a double digit underdog. Check it out!

Canon 1Dx, 24-70mm, 250iso, f5.6, 1/100th, Manual NHRA pro stock driver Allen Johnson (left) races alongside Rickie Jones during qualifying for the Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

After missing the previous four NHRA races I arrived in Denver motivated and ready to produce up on the mountain at Bandimere Speedway. With the track built right into the side of the mountain it provides beautiful shots of the stars and cars of the NHRA.

After a few days of shooting below the tree line it was time for me to experience more of what Pikes Peak had to offer. Boy am I glad I did!

Canon 1Dx, 70-200mm, 250iso, f5.6, 1/1000th, Manual Smoke pours from the Subaru of Gregoire Blachon during qualifying for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Yesterday I made the flight up to Colorado for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. After having fun shooting the private practice a few weeks ago I was antsy to get back up on the mountain…. despite the 2:30am wakeup calls I will endure the next few days.

Canon 1Dx, 70-200mm, 800iso, f5.6, 1/1000th, Manual The first car of the day, Jeff Zwart in a Porsche GT3 Cup races up the mountain through the glare of the rising sun.

A few weeks ago I found out I would be covering my first Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Naturally I was super excited about the gig but also nervous. I had never shot Pikes Peak before so I had no clue where to go and what to do. Luckily at the last minute I got invited to shoot a testing session with some teams on the mountain. Sweet!

I find it funny how I will randomly end up stumbling across something worth shooting. It happened to me yesterday in Colorado while driving to my hotel near Pikes Peak….

After the fall I was literally three feet from Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis so I simply laid where I had fallen and got a pretty cool low angle of Lewis sobbing with his face to the grass. It was a cool moment to be so close to... even though I was in so much pain from my fall. The bruise lasted nearly two weeks. The embarrassment will certainly live on forever.

Nothing beats finding out you got a photo credential two days before a big playoff game. That would be the case for me with the AFC Divisional matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos. The game would take place in Denver where game time weather conditions were in the SINGLE DIGITS. By the end of this marathon game I wouldn’t be able to feel a SINGLE DIGIT on my hands. On to the game!
