Its 1:23am in my hotel room after a long day of traveling and shooting two NHRA pro qualifying sessions but I am hell bent of posting my first same day 10 Spot photo blog in my new experiment of 10 photos a day blogs. Today was the opening day of pro qualifying for the Mile High Nationals in Morrison, CO. Lets get to the images.
Above, a lucky flash from a fan behind the starting line added a nice little element to this shot of Spencer Massey as he races down track. Massey would end the day as the top qualifier… and with tomorrows hot temps I HIGHLY doubt anyone will knock Spencer off the pole.
Below, an aerial view from my seat on todays flight looking down on Bandimere Speedway.

Here is a standard slow shutter speed pan blur shot of the pro stock car of Allen Johnson. Johnson would end the day as the top qualifier.

A praying mantis hangs out on the Nikon D4 of my buddy Ron Chenoy on the starting line. I always knew praying mantis’ preferred Nikon!

24 hours ago the country was rocked by the tragic news out of nearby Aurora, CO where a single gunman shot up a movie theater killing 14 and injuring over 50. At the race track today they had the flags at half mast, along with holding a prayer and moment of silence.

Pro stock motorcycle rider Paul Ray Jr sits on his bike as he hangs out in the staging lanes prior to the first round of qualifying.
Nikon D4, 14-24mm, 100iso, f2.8, 1/250th, Aperture Priority
Jason Line races downtrack in his four race old Chevy Camaro. The blue car along with the blue sky reflecting off the shiny track made for a cool looking shot.
Nikon D4, 14-24mm, 400iso, f5.6, 1/3200th, Aperture Priority
As the sun starts to set behind the mountain against the track, funny car driver Johnny Gray does a burnout past a crew member.
Nikon D4, 14-24mm, 400iso, f5.6, 1/5000th, Aperture Priority
Crew members watch behind the starting line as NHRA top fuel dragster driver Clay Millican launches off the starting line during qualifying.

I recently got a new 14-24mm wide angle lens. I pout it through its paces today. This shot of top fuel driver Steve Torrence was shot by literally holding the camera inside the cockpit.

That wraps up day one of the Mile High Nationals!
