Ever since the beginning of the year when NASCAR officials made the now famous quote, “Boys have at it” in regards to relaxed rules with bump drafting and drivers self policing the garage everyone has been waiting for the drivers to get on track at the biggest and baddest track on the circuit. Talladega. The racing would more than live up to the hype. Strap in tight, its gonna be a bumpy ride!
So on the first day of 2010 I present my final Best of 2009 blog. So without further adieu here are my best crash and burn images of 2009. Enjoy!
It has been three years since I made the trip to the rolling hills of the wine country to cover NASCAR as they raced around the winding turns of Infineon Raceway. NASCAR has 38 races a year and only two of them occur on tracks with left and right turns. This is the first road course of the season. It makes things a pain in the ass for drivers as well as us photographers.
The race I look forward to more than any other is the Daytona 500 every February in Florida. Typically it is one of the most exciting races of the year and is always great with photo sales. During the first 8 days of Daytona it did not rain once. Of course on race day it would all change and make for a dreary and disappointing day for myself, the 100 thousand plus fans in attendance and millions watching on TV around the world.
Just three months ago NASCAR closed out their 2008 season down in Miami. At that time I was close to burned out after a pretty rough schedule of races and was glad to see it end. As it always works, after a few weeks off, I was ready for it to come back. The 2009 season began this weekend up the Florida coast in Daytona Beach, where the stars and cars of NASCAR and the ARCA series wasted no time in destroying some cars.
