Ever since Phoenix was announced as the host of the 2011 All Star Game a few years ago all of us local photographer have been looking forward to the game. Not because of all the star players but because the grandstands would actually be packed and make for better looking photos. We would not be disappointed as a capacity crowd would fill Chase Field in Phoenix as the stars of MLB came out to play.
One thing I am always keeping an eye on in my job is the next up and coming superstars. Getting good quality images of athletes before they’re famous typically will lead to sales of the images for many years to come. About a year ago I read a story about a high school baseball player, Bryce Harper, who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. After reading the story I made a mental note to cover him before he went to the majors.

As a photographer who works between 50-60 hours a week one thing that gets tough is taking the extra time to try unique shots. Sure sometimes it can produce something wonderful that makes it worth the extra time and effort but more often than not it doesn’t work as planned and leaves you pissed off for taking all the extra time instead of just doing the normal thing everyone else does. But in these economic times with photographers being laid off and freelance budgets drying up it is imperative to be different from the norm to survive as a photographer. Since major league baseball opened their 2009 season a few days ago I figured it was about time to post some of my favorite shots from the few spring training games I found time to shoot this year. Normally I try to shoot 15-20 games during spring training but this time I shot 6. So here we go.
Here are some of my favorites from the 2008 baseball season. Unlike last year where I started in Spring Training and finished in the World Series, this year would be a much shorter season as my season ended when the Diamondbacks season finished….in September.
