My last NASCAR race was back in March in Las Vegas so I had been itching for awhile to get back on the circuit to shoot some stock car action. For the fifth straight year I would be fortunate enough to cover the July Daytona race. Now most of my photographer friends despise this race due to the hot weather and high chance of rain but I honestly love this race. It always makes for great photos and this year would be no different!

After several months of only shooting football and basketball it was time to get back to shooting one of my favorite sports, NASCAR. Unlike nearly every other sport in the world which has their biggest event towards the end of the season, the biggest race on the NASCAR calendar is the first race of the season. Strap in as I show you my best imagery from 12 days at the World Center of Speed in Daytona Beach.

The past two weeks I have been busy shooting drag racing and while I have had fun (excluding my 10k loss) I really didn’t get much as far as wild action so I was a very happy guy to know the next stop on my schedule would be NASCAR on the craziest track on the circuit, Talladega!

With the opening week of Daytona out of the way all eyes would be on the biggest race of the year, the Daytona 500. Oh and Danicas first Nationwide start. Both races would live up to the hype and then some.

Just a few months ago the NASCAR season ended in Miami, fast forward three months and about 250 miles north on I-95 and it was time for the 2010 season to kick off with high speed action in Daytona Beach.

So on the first day of 2010 I present my final Best of 2009 blog. So without further adieu here are my best crash and burn images of 2009. Enjoy!

Every year I keep saying I am not gonna do the race at Fontana yet every year I end up caving in and covering the action on the two mile oval of Auto Club Speedway. Don’t get me wrong, the track is top notch and the media are treated great by the tracks staff but nothing can overcome the simple fact that it is a boring track that lacks the normal action fans are used to at other tracks.

Every once in awhile a crash occurs that has the sports world talking for days. Carl Edwards experienced one of those crashes when he went airborne on the last lap of the Aarons 499 at the Talladega Superspeedway. With its location in the tri-oval plus occuring on the last lap it would be one of the most photographed NASCAR crashes ever. Sadly I wouldn’t be one of the many photographers who would have their coolest crash shot ever. Read on to see my failure.

Beyond all the successes and events I shot during 2008, nothing can compare to my 3 weeks in Beijing, China covering the 2008 Summer Olympics. It was my first Olympics and allowed me the chance to try and compete with the worlds best sports photographers. It was a very long, exciting, eye opening trip.
