For the last several years I have spent New Years eve in Tempe, AZ covering the Insight Bowl. I am guessing most of you have never heard of the game and would wonder why I’d waste my evening covering a bowl game nobody cares about. My answer is simple. Last weekend I went up to cover tryouts for a new football league set to kick off this fall. The United Football League (UFL) was something I had honestly never even heard of until about a week prior to this shoot. Perhaps I had heard a year or so ago about a new league trying to begin but as with most sports fans I quickly dismissed it as something that was doomed to fail (like me taking a 10th grade algebra test). One of the cool aspects about the shoot I was looking forward to was that I would be shooting for the UFL so I was promised some good access for shooting. The hardest part of the shoot would be to not get drunk the night before on the strip!
.Last week I was shooting a boring race in overcast weather in California, this weekend I found myself in sunny Las Vegas shooting NASCAR on the much more exciting Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Although anything would have been better than last weekend, Vegas would prove to be a great weekend with lots of cool photos.
.After a great shoot just 7 hours prior in Phoenix it was a lovely 6am wakeup call New Years day to hop on a plane for the quick jump over to LA for the Rose Bowl. I was tired, sore and cranky but the gorgeous weather and great light motivated me to cheer up in time for a New Years tradition.
.If the Phoenix International Raceway wasn’t 30 miles from my house I doubt I would come to this race. While it is a fun track to drive on its not quite as fun as a fan. So instead of hanging out waiting for some action I decided to really put in 100% effort and try and kick some ass. Continue reading to see what I came up with.
