We are down to five Best of 2010 blogs. Now on tap is my best of drag racing. 2010 was a great year in that I got to cover more drag racing than I have covered since 1997. By covering several races this year I got some pretty cool stuff. Check it out.

This is a big blog so lets get underway…

Ashley Force Hood strikes the tires as she does a burnout prior to making a qualifying run at the Arizona Nationals, below.

Nikon D700, 80-200mm, 100iso, f5, 1/800th, Aperture Priority

Top Fuel Dragster driver Antron Brown (below) reflects in his tow vehicle as he gets suited up prior to making a run.

Nikon D700, 80-200mm, 500iso, f2.8, 1/1000th, Aperture Priority

Below, NHRA pro stock driver Gordie Rivera loses control and crashes during qualifying for the Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 640iso, f4, 1/2000th, Aperture Priority

As Riveras upside down car slid towards me the 600mm I was shooting with quickly became too much lens so I put that camera down and grabbed a wider body to shoot as he slid on his roof past me, below.

Nikon D700, 80-200mm, 400iso, f2.8, 1/8000th, Aperture Priority

Below, NHRA funny car driver Paul Lee hits the centerline cones during qualifying for the Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 640iso, f4, 1/1250th, Aperture Priority

Below, NHRA top fuel dragster driver David Grubnic (right) lights up the evening sky as he explodes an engine alongside Steve Torrence during qualifying for the Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.

Below, Cory McClenathan (near) and Troy Buff launch off the starting line during night time qualifying.

Huge header flames come from the dragster of Larry Dixon just before he smokes the tires and aborts the below qualifying run at the Arizona Nationals.

Below, NHRA pro stock driver Vinnie Deceglie crashes alongside Bob Yonke during qualifying for the Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 640iso, f6.3, 1/3200th, Aperture Priority

Here is another angle of the crash from a remote camera I placed atop a bridge over the track.

Nikon D700, 300mm, 1600iso, f8, 1/4000th, Aperture Priority

As Deceglie slid past me on his roof a fire started under the hood resulting in the below photo.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 640iso, f6.3, 1/5000th, Aperture Priority

With all the carnage I was getting at this race I actually stuck around to shoot classes of cars I would never spend time shoot, all because I “had a feeling” that more action was to occur. Much to my surprise (kinda) I got yet another wild ride as Matt Gilmore, driving in the slowest class in NHRA Super Street would lose control of his mustang and crash into the wall during the Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 1250iso, f4, 1/800th, Aperture Priority

Below, NHRA funny car driver Jack Beckman speeds down track during the Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway. (The spots of light filling the frame is light reflecting off the glass windows of a sponsors suite in background).

Below, Nostalgia funny car driver Don Hudson (left) nearly collides with Todd Lesenko during qualifying for the 52nd annual March Meet at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 800iso, f5.6, 1/2000th, Manual

Using a remote camera placed atop a cherry picker hanging over the finish line I got the below frame of Nostalgia funny car driver Cruz Pedregon (top) as he defeats Dan Horan during the 52nd annual March Meet at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway.

Nikon D700, 24-70mm, 1000iso, f5, 1/8000th, Manual

Below, NHRA funny car driver Gary Densham blows the body off his car after an explosion during qualifying for the Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 6400iso, f4, 1/400th, Manual

By using a super slow shutter speed I produced the below shot of NHRA funny car driver Ron Capps during qualifying for the Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway. The funny thing about that photo is he was going less than 30 mph in the shot.

Nikon D700, 80-200mm, 4000iso, f3.2, 1/25th, Aperture Priority

Below, NHRA top fuel dragster driver Bob Vandergriff Jr reflects in the window of his tow vehicle as he walks to his car during qualifying for the Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway.

Nikon D700, 400mm with 1.4 convertor (550mm), 1000iso, f4.5, 1/1250th, Manual

One of my favorite drag racing shots of the year is the below shot of funny car driver Bob Tasca III silhouetted as he races downtrack during qualifying for the US Nationals.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 2500iso, f4, 1/2500th, Aperture Priority

Below is a portrait of NHRA top fuel dragster driver Cory McClenathan as he sits strapped into his car during qualifying for the U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

Nikon D700, 24-70mm, 100iso, f13, 1/250th, Manual with Strobes

Another shot in 2010 I really liked was the below frame of Greg Anderson as he does a burnout in Charlotte. I just love the look of the silhouetted crew members walking through the smoke.

Nikon D700, 600mm, 320iso, f6.3, 1/8000th, Aperture Priority

A nostalgia top fuel dragster blows an engine in the lights at the California Hot Rod Reunion, below.

In one of the bigger fireballs I have ever seen in my 20 years of shooting drag racing, top fuel driver Lex Joon detonates an engine during qualifying, below.
