After a thrilling victory by Dale Earnhardt Jr in the season opening Daytona 500, there was a lot of excitement and energy in the sport as the series made their first of two trips on the year to Phoenix International Raceway, the “Jewel in the Desert”. NASCAR wrapped up its 2013 season a few weeks ago in sunny Miami, FL and I was fortunate enough to be there covering my ninth NASCAR championship race. By the end of the weekend I would be shooting a familiar face in championship victory lane.

Thanks to NHRA being rained out in nearby Commerce, GA I was able to get credentialed on short notice to cover NASCAR at my favorite track, Talladega.  Due to NHRA obligations I missed both of last years races for the first time since 2006 so I was very happy to be at the craziest track in NASCAR.

XXXXNASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Carl Edwards celebrates with a backflip after winning the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

After two days of sunny skies we would arrive to the track on race day to overcast skies. While cloudy makes the long day less strenuous, Phoenix is one of the best tracks for nice light so it was a slight disappointment to not have the wonderful sun light to work with. On to the race!

XXXXNASCAR K&N Pro Series West driver Kelly Admiraal (83) goes airborne after crashing into Dallas Montes (29) during the Talking Stick Resort 60 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Day two of racing at PIR would consist of some Sprint Cup practice followed by the Nationwide race only to be followed by one more race, the K&N Pro Series West. It was a rough and banging day in the desert so lets get to it.
