Yesterday I made the flight up to Colorado for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. After having fun shooting the private practice a few weeks ago I was antsy to get back up on the mountain…. despite the 2:30am wakeup calls I will endure the next few days.

Canon 1Dx, 70-200mm, 800iso, f5.6, 1/1000th, Manual The first car of the day, Jeff Zwart in a Porsche GT3 Cup races up the mountain through the glare of the rising sun.

A few weeks ago I found out I would be covering my first Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Naturally I was super excited about the gig but also nervous. I had never shot Pikes Peak before so I had no clue where to go and what to do. Luckily at the last minute I got invited to shoot a testing session with some teams on the mountain. Sweet!

Canon 1Dx, 70-200mm, 400iso, f5.6, 1/400th, Aperture Priority A family watches from the top of a hill as smoke rises from the fire less than two miles from their neighborhood.

I find it funny how I will randomly end up stumbling across something worth shooting. It happened to me yesterday in Colorado while driving to my hotel near Pikes Peak….

Still have a few more Best of 2012 galleries to post before we start with 2013. This time its my favorite Nature/Scenery from the year. Very rarely do I actually go out intending to cover nature but since I almost always carry my camera with me it leads to most of these random photos. Enjoy!

My biggest fear while at Olympics was missing the bulk of the summer monsoon storms that sweep across Arizona. Even though sports and racing is what pays my bills, I am obsessed with storm chasing! Luckily for me I didn’t miss many storms while I was gone. Now that I am home I was sure to plan a few days off into my schedule to allowed me to start catching up on my storm shooting. Today would be one of those days.

My last couple days in London I told myself multiple times how I couldn’t wait to get home and not have to pick up a camera for several days. Just two days after getting home I would take a fishing trip with a buddy… and I would be happily picking up a camera and working my ass off!

After months of traveling to the Olympics in the back of my mind, the day finally came to board the plane to London for my second summer Olympics.

Ever since I moved to a high rise in downtown Phoenix I have anxiously been awaiting the arrival of the summer monsoon season. The hardest part about shooting lightning storms is getting to a good elevation to see above the surrounding areas. The 23rd floor would certainly offer a killer vantage point once the storm season began.

Literally hours after I posted my last storm chasing blog I saw some good radar activity on my iPad while sitting at Chilis watching some racing and hauled ass out to the desert to see what I could get. While this monsoon season has been rather tame, little did I know at the time but this one night would make my entire monsoon season a good one!
