Canon 1Dx, 24-70mm, 100iso, f8, 1/250th, Manual with Flash NHRA top fuel dragster driver Steve Torrence poses for a photo with the Kilgore College Rangerettes at the Torrence estate.

Leading up to the NHRA races in Houston, Steve Torrence wanted to a cool promotional photo shoot to highlight the race in his home state. He didn’t have to look any further than a few miles down the road in his hometown of Kilgore, TX for the perfect way to represent Texas. Ladies and gentleman meet the Kilgore Rangerettes. Continue on to see the shoot!

When I received a phone call from Steve Torrence a few weeks before the Houston event seeing if I was available to come to Houston a few days early to cover an event occurring at his house. After hearing the details of the shoot I knew it had the potential to produce some fun and unique images.

The one problem is I am terrified of shooting large groups of people. Seriously!

Of course you never let that on to your clients so I began trying to plan shooting a dragster and 50 cheerlea… uhhh I  mean Rangerettes!

As soon as the Rangerettes arrived with their two coaches I knew I had nothing to worry about. The coaches were like drill instructors and quickly guided the girls into perfect formations wherever we moved.

When I showed up for the shoot the car was parked in front of the house (below photo), it looked cool but was a little over the top MTV cribbish so I quickly determined we’d need to relocate the car…. but not until I shot a few photos because how often do I get a gorgeous mansion as the background for a dragster photo?!

Thanks to the awesome Torrence Racing crew members, we repositioned the car in less than a minute. Nice green trees and blue skied background was exactly what I wanted!

I can only do so many group shots before it gets boring and I have to come up with some other ideas.

My first idea involved a crew member running inside the house to grab a Wally to use in some shots.

A 14 ft ladder was a perfect vantage point to get something fun.

You can’t hang out with the Rangerettes without some leg kicks!

Another shot I had in my head prior to the shoot was Steve doing leg kicks in his firesuit with the girls.

Just when I thought the shoot was wrapping up someone planted the bug in Steves head (I’m pretty sure it was me) to fire up the car so the girls could experience nitro…. and for me to get some more pics.

Once he told the girls about it everyone was excited…..   except the crew who now had to prepare the 10 thousand horsepower beast to fire up.

The upper 80 degree temps had everyone sweating so we took a 15 minute break inside so Steves mother Kay could show the girls videos of NHRA so the girls could better understand the 330mph rocket they were about to hear fire up.

After the drag racing tutorial it was out to the backyard garden for a group shot of the girls.

By this time the crew was getting close to having the engine ready to fire up for the girls so back out front we went!

I tried talking Steve into a fire burnout but was shot down. 🙁

After the warm up one girl asked Steve if she could sit in the car and once he said yes I’d say more than half the girls got in line by the car to sit inside and have friends take their photo with their camera phones.

After finishing the great shoot it was finally time for me to go fish the backyard pond I had been eying since I arrived that morning.

The fishing in that pond was awesome. I spent about 3 hours time fishing it and got 11 bass. Wish my backyard lake was that productive!

That wraps up a fun and unique photo shoot. Next stop Houston for the races!
