Nearly all my life I have been covering drag racing but never have I covered near as many events as I did in 2011. With that said lets jump right into the second to last “Best of 2011” blog with my best drag racing photos of 2011.

Race three on the 2011 NHRA tour took us to nearly everyones favorite stop on the 300 mph traveling roadshow, Las Vegas! I like Vegas more because its a nice track to shoot at and most importantly its close to Phoenix so I am able to drive my own car instead of some lame economy rental car. After this weekend I am guessing this track will now be one of Antron Browns favorite tracks as well. On to the strip!

A week earlier I was on the east coast covering NASCAR in Daytona, a few days later it was over to the west coast to shoot the season opening NHRA Winternationals. As everyone knows, drag racing is one of my favorite sports to shoot. With that in mind it was off to Pomona, CA motivated as hell to start off my 2011 NHRA season with some good shots!

A new category in my best of series this year is my best portraits. While I rarely shoot portraits I have been doing my best to make an effort to start doing more so I can get better at them. While the photos in this post are not on the level of my sports action stuff I will share them anyways.

NASCAR is one of my favorite sports to shoot. In 2009 I found myself covering several more races than I initially planned at the start of the season. Thats a good thing though because it allowed me to get some pretty cool shots which makes for a better year in NASCAR photos! Enjoy.

Its been approaching four years since I got out of the Navy with an honorable discharge after almost five years of service but it honestly seems like yesterday that I made my living as a military photographer on the flight deck of the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. While I am sooooooo much happier with my life as a civilian I still would kill to go back out on a carrier to do some more flight deck photography! I have a job where I am lucky enough to travel the world shooting the biggest sporting events on the planet, however one of my favorite sports to shoot is drag racing. Its a sport where cars go from zero to 300mph in a few seconds. Also in those few seconds they can go from beautiful pieces of machinery to piles of twisted metal. Once again for no good reason I spent a weekend shooting NASCAR in Fontana, CA. Now don’t get me wrong, its a nice track, with a great staff and plenty of good shooting positions but plain and simple, its a boring track. Trust me I am not the only one who feels this way, just take a look at any race here and you will see thousands of empty seats that end up being more of a story each year than the races themselves.

2008 was a good year for me covering NASCAR, and although for the second straight year I shot less races than the year before I feel I produced many more quality photos in the shorter time span. Throughout the year there are some sports I cover only once or twice so instead of leaving them out I have decided to show some of my best sports images from random sports. Some of my best photos of the year came from some of these random sports that I normally dont shoot. So while a lot of these sports are far from random for most of you, they are for me.
