As if the weekend for the John Force family hadn’t been enough with John Force’s wild qualifying explosion that sent him to the hospital, during the first round of eliminations at the season opening NHRA Winternationals, reining World Champion Brittany Force would ride out a wild crash in her Monster Energy sponsored dragster that would have Brittany bouncing off both walls before getting upside down and then on fire. Continue on to see the crash from start to finish through the lens of my Canon 1dx mk2….

During driver introductions prior to the race Brittany Force would receive her world championship ring and jacket during a ceremony. As she walked off the stage, father John Force was the first to come congratulate her.

34 minutes later the champ would be launching off the starting line alongside Terry Haddock.

Haddock would go up on smoke at the hit.

Brittany would follow 100 feet later.

Brittany would pedal the car and it appeared she would recover and maintain traction.

Then the car would lose traction and snap sideways.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

Brittany was quickly out of the throttle and counter steering.

But it still wasn’t enough as the car would slowly start sliding.

You can’t turn the wheels on that dragster any further to the right than that.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

The car starts to tip over before the rear canard wing acts as a training wheel.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

Without that wing the car is rolling over at this point.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

Instead the wing plus her steering would pop the car back to the right direction.

It almost seemed like she might save it at this point.

Unfortunately the momentum built crossing the track was too much to recover from and Force would slam into the left lane wall.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

Theft side of the car was flattened and the front was bent in front of the drivers compartment.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

The car would seem to be in slow motion as it did a complete 360 degree spin.

Brittany would cross the finish line backwards.

The car was now heading for an impact with the right lane wall.

Before getting to the wall the car would begin to roll over.

The never-ending crash would continue with the car now upside down.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

The front half of the chassis breaks in half as Brittany hits the right lane wall.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

Despite the broken chassis, the fuel line from the front end fuel cell back to the engine remained connected.

The car would settle back down right side up.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

The front end of the car began to rotate away from the car.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

And that finally ruptured the fuel line shooting fuel right around the time that the engine would catch fire.

Thankfully this was as big as the fire would get.

Canon 1Dx mk2, 300mm, 500iso, f6.3, 1/2000th, Manual

The trail of fuel would ignite a trail of fire behind the car.

Check out the quick acting safety safari member running to grab the fire extinguisher as the car goes past him.

The Safety Safari was immediately on the scene to extinguish the fire and tend to Brittany.

After what seemed like an eternity, Brittany would emerge from the crashed dragster as father John Force (left) looked on.

Brittany would be transported to a local hospital where she spent the night to be treated for a shoulder injury and bruised lung. The champ will fully recover!

In addition to my handheld shots, I also got some photos out of my trackside remote that I had set up at the 1320 mark.

Check out this uncropped version of one of the shots as crew members for Brittany Force get one hell of an up close view of their driver crashing. Wonder what was going through their mind at this moment!

Get well soon Brittany!
