10 Spot / Olympics July 27

Nikon D4, 600mm, 8000iso, f4, 1/8000th, Aperture Priority

I have a love hate with covering the Opening Ceremonies for the Olympics. On one hand its an incredibly long day as a photographer which results in you sitting in your position for up to six hours prior to it starting. On the other hand you get to witness incredible scenes and a fireworks show to die for. On with the show! Above, the Olympic torch burns brightly after being lit. One thing our editors really wanted us to get were shots of any of the Royal Family. Shots like that are always hard to get with how far away they put royalty from us scummy photogs! Luckily I brought my 600mm lens and threw it on my 36 megapixel D800 which allowed me to briefly get Prince William and his wife Kate just before sitting down and being blocked from my view. Sadly Kates sister Pippa was nowhere to be seen…

A villainous looking performer flies above the stadium via a cable belt. I need to get me one of those!

British military members raise the British flag as the capacity crowd looks on.

This was one of my favorite images from the night as performers dance in smoke below a giant yellow light which is either supposed to be the sun… or a giant wheel of cheese!

I would love to see the photo taken by this German athlete as he takes an epic self portrait while riding on the shoulders of a teammate. He kinda looks like Jason Giambi. #beforeroids

My favorite part of covering international events is when the USA comes out waving the beautiful stars and stripes. I get goose bumps all day long.

USA Dream Team basketball player Kevin Durant soaks in the Olympic experience as he marches out with his country.

My shooting position was too low to really get overall stadium shots with fireworks so this is as good as it would get for me. Still looks kinda cool.

Can’t cover an opening ceremony without a cool picture of myself in the middle of it. As much as I love to bitch and complain about everything, I do know how incredibly fortunate I am to have a dream job that takes me all over the world doing what I love. #lifeisgood

I have a Facebook page devoted my photography where I routinely share my favorite photos from each shoot as well as favorite photos from the past. Click the below banner to check it out. Be sure to “like” the page so you can be kept up to date on all the events I am doing!
